If you prefer using Chrome, Firefox, Brave, or another browser instead of Microsoft Edge, you can set it as your default in Windows 11 in just a few steps.

This guide shows you the quickest way to change your default browser.

The Quickest Way (Windows 11 22H2 or Newer)

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Click Apps.
  3. Select Default apps.
  4. Scroll down and click the browser you want to use.
  5. Click Set default at the top.

That’s it. Your browser is now the default for web links.

If You Don’t See “Set Default”

Some older versions of Windows 11 require manual setup.

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > Default apps.
  2. Click your preferred browser.
  3. Change these file types to your browser:
  • .htm
  • .html
  • HTTP
  • HTTPS

Click each one and select your browser from the list.

How to Change It from Inside the Browser

Most browsers let you change it directly:

  1. Open your browser.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Find Default browser.
  4. Click Make default.

Windows will open the Default Apps page to confirm.

How to Check Your Windows Version

If the “Set default” button is missing:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
winver
  1. Press Enter.

If you are on an older build, update Windows to get the simplified option.

Common Questions

Does this remove Microsoft Edge?
No. Edge remains installed, but it won’t open web links unless you choose it.

Can I switch back later?
Yes. You can change your default browser anytime using the same steps.
