How to Turn Off BitLocker in Windows 11

BitLocker is Windows’ built-in drive encryption feature. It protects your data if your laptop is lost or stolen.

But sometimes you might want to turn it off — for example, before upgrading hardware, reinstalling Windows, or fixing boot issues.

Here’s how to disable it properly.

Before You Turn It Off

When you disable BitLocker, Windows will decrypt your drive.

That means:

  • Your files remain safe.
  • Encryption is removed.
  • The process can take time depending on drive size.

Make sure your laptop is plugged in before starting.

Method 1: Turn Off BitLocker Through Settings

This is the easiest way.

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Go to Privacy & security.
  3. Click Device encryption.

If encryption is enabled, you’ll see a toggle.

  1. Click Turn off.
  2. Confirm when prompted.

Windows will begin decrypting the drive.

You can keep using your PC while it works.

Method 2: Turn Off BitLocker via Control Panel

If you’re using full BitLocker (not just Device Encryption):

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
control
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Go to System and Security.
  3. Click BitLocker Drive Encryption.
  4. Find your system drive (usually C:).
  5. Click Turn off BitLocker.
  6. Confirm.

Decryption will begin.

How to Check If BitLocker Is Still Active

To check status:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type BitLocker.
  3. Open Manage BitLocker.

Or use Command Prompt:

manage-bde -status

It will show whether encryption is On or Off.

How Long Does It Take?

It depends on:

  • Drive size
  • SSD vs HDD
  • Amount of data

On modern SSDs, it can take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour.

When You Should Not Turn It Off

You may want to keep BitLocker enabled if:

  • You use a laptop outside your home
  • You store sensitive data
  • You travel frequently
  • Your device contains work information

BitLocker does not slow down modern systems in normal use.

Common Questions

Will this delete my files?
No. It only removes encryption.

Can I turn it back on later?
Yes. You can re-enable it anytime in the same menu.

Why was BitLocker turned on automatically?
Many Windows 11 devices enable Device Encryption automatically if you sign in with a Microsoft account.
