How to Show Hidden Files in Windows 11

518

Windows hides certain files and folders by default. These are usually system files or configuration files that most users don’t need to touch.

Sometimes, though, you need to see them — for troubleshooting, deleting leftover files, or editing configuration folders.

Here’s how to reveal hidden files safely.

Quickest Way (File Explorer Method)

This is the fastest way.

  1. Open File Explorer (Windows + E).
  2. Click View in the top menu.
  3. Hover over Show.
  4. Click Hidden items.

Hidden files will now appear slightly faded compared to normal files.

That’s it.

Alternative Method (Folder Options)

If you prefer the classic method:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Click the three dots (…) in the top toolbar.
  3. Select Options.
  4. Go to the View tab.
  5. Under Advanced settings, find Hidden files and folders.
  6. Select Show hidden files, folders, and drives.
  7. Click Apply, then OK.

How to Show Protected System Files (Advanced)

Windows hides certain critical system files even when “Hidden items” is enabled.

If you really need to see them:

  1. Open File Explorer Options.
  2. Go to the View tab.
  3. Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (Recommended).
  4. Confirm the warning.

Be careful — deleting system files can break Windows.

If you’re not sure what a file does, don’t delete it.

Common Hidden Folders People Look For

Some frequently accessed hidden folders include:

C:\Users\YourName\AppData
C:\ProgramData

You can also access AppData quickly by pressing:

Windows + R

Then typing:

%appdata%

Why Windows Hides Files

Windows hides certain files to:

  • Prevent accidental deletion
  • Protect system stability
  • Reduce clutter

Most hidden files are not meant to be modified unless you know what you’re doing.

How to Hide Them Again

If you’re done:

  • Go back to View → Show → Hidden items
  • Turn it off

Or re-enable “Hide protected operating system files” in Folder Options.
